It's risky to bench two-thirds of your stars in order to shine some light on some pretty minor characters for a whole episode. Yet, that is exactly what This Is Us does with "The Big Day." And I'm happy to report it works. It really, really works.
Thriving on excellent performances ... and an honest approach to sensitive topics such as grief, a father's role within the family and the overwhelming fear of failing as a new parent, "The Big Day" is one of the strongest episodes on This Is Us to date.
"The Big Day" didn't rely on twists. By focusing on marriages in three different states, the episode found the emotional truth in these characters lives and the episode was all the better for it.
