After an apocalypse, it is understandably necessary to bring things down a notch, and this season finds our heroes back to the more fundamental job of hunting down monsters.
It was rather predictable (other than Dean spiking his blood, which I thought was a nicely revealed surprise) but had the familiar rhythms of a well-constructed episode of Supernatural, and the jokes landed.
Sera Gamble keeps Sam and Dean's strong dynamic, but tweaks it enough to feel new, and there's a maturity here that helps make the lunge towards the reset button more palatable.
While Supernatural's finale is extremely entertaining and generally well-planned, the fact that The CW made the rare decision of extending the presentation to two hours slightly spoiled the fans - in respect to instant gratification.
