Saturday Night Live - Season 44, Episode 05: Liev Schreiber / Lil Wayne
Trailer
On Saturday night, a new season, a late-night comedy show featuring several short plays, simulations of television commercials, and a live band. There is a new team of award-winning celebrities performing comics and popular music stars. It is a new display of a wide range of music and graphics that seem to be the most famous and have won the admiration of many.
When a political event happens and SNL doesn't quite know how to make it funny, their last resort is to put McKinnon out there and have her cover a pop song as one of her goofy characters. It always feels a little empty.
I found the whole thing embarrassing, not only because it's the latest in a long history of SNL capitulation to conservative indignation... but also because it was indicative of the show's schmaltzy centrism.
It makes me wonder if the midterms, combined with Davidson's poor joke and the subsequent reaction, haven't inspired something of a political shift for the show.
