After all, the episode's title is "That'll Be the Day," and I spent too many long car rides as a child listening to my parents' oldies station not to know that that jauntily sung Buddy Holly lyric ends with the words, "that I die."
And then the episode went ahead and ended on a cliffhanger instead, leaving all that emotional buildup without anywhere to go. What a classic This Is Us twist!
As we saw last week, the smoke detector is broken. At this point, probably every This Is Us fan ever is sobbing. We're still left with tons of questions though, which will all be answered in next week's episode.
Like so many things with this show, what's actually going on isn't anything monumental, but every single scene set in the past has extra weight to it because we know what we know.
With "That'll Be the Day" as its title, we knew the Tuesday, January 23, episode of This Is Us had to be a doozy, likely related to Jack's death, and we were right.
