The X-Files - Season 11, Episode 01: My Struggle III
Trailer
Two FBI agents, Fox Mulder the believer and Dana Scully the skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained, while hidden forces work to impede their efforts.
Yes, the strangest truth of all is that the show that basically invented the modern procedural (case/monster-of-the-week mixed with serialized background noise/mythology) has now lost its serialized mojo.
[The mythology is like] one of those illusory conspiracies out of a Raúl Ruiz or Jacques Rivette film in which the aura of something sinister matters more than the reasons behind the portent.
There's a glorious insanity to "My Struggle III" that approaches telenovela ridiculousness and climaxes in a series of revelations that challenge the entire arc of the show.
This isn't really good, and my main hope for the rest of the season is that all of these elements are either shoved to the background or presented in a different light once the show's other writers get on board. But at least it's not a total collapse.
It is with heavy heart that I inform you that the first episode of the sci-fi drama's Season 11 is like Eddie Van Blundht's version of Mulder: It sounds a lot like the entity we know and love, but really just turns out to be bloated and a little dumb.
Even though The X-Files stumbles out of the gate in season 11, it seems there's still some life left in Mulder and Scully's search for the Truth after all.
