Even when the show slightly misfires, it still manages to find laughs in unlikely places, while its unflinching, creative approaches to original ideas keep us engaged, entertained and wondering what misadventures the Gang will be caught up in next.
"The Gang Turns Black" absolutely worked, finding Always Sunny drawing from the creative well that has made this such an enduring brand for over a decade and counting. It was funny, it was creative, it was irreverent, and, more importantly, it was risky.
The episode is risky, to be sure. But despite its illusion of being ribald, the premiere has a dirty secret: meticulous, thoughtful commentary, cleverly snuck in between low-brow antics.
Rarely do comedies last as long as this one has, and rarer still do they continue to challenge themselves as well as their viewers. Judge it however you like, but the gang has made it impossible to ignore Sunny in 2017.
