Curry is a stand-up comic whom ABC is said to be high on. His goofiness wears thin tonight, however, and it's [Dawnn] Lewis and [Holly] Robinson who are the most appealing components of the premiere.
As likable as star Mark Curry is in the premiere of a weird comedic hybrid called Hangin` With Mr. Cooper, watching this show is nevertheless an experience akin to walking into a closet cluttered with cliches.
While unlikely to win any awards for sophisticated humor, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper has its moments, with an appealing cast and occasional flashes of what might pass for wit if not examined too closely.
When the focus is on the trio's fractious home life, the show is lively enough to overcome its formulaic nature. But [Mark] Curry also plays a substitute teacher, which means he's often surrounded by precocious little smart alecks.
The series could easily be dismissed as a black Three's Company. But it's really not as dismissable as it sounds, mainly because [Mark] Curry does have a winning personality, a comfortably clownish demeanor.
