Season 4 opens with Daphne's ex-fiancé, Clive, visitting her in Seattle to declare his continuing love for her. Rather than tell him the truth, that she can't see a future for them, she pretends to be married to Niles.
It's one of the rare shows that trusts the audience to be smart enough to catch the subtle jokes. Though the show was always strong, the characters are really hitting their stride by this point.
