Season 6 is back without Jessica Lange and is focusing on the physical and psychological fears traumatising the staff and clients at a terrified colony.
There was no opening credits nor was there a teaser for the next episode. The whole point of watching a horror flick is that you never know what's going to happen next. True horror fans understand that and live for the surprise.
However it happened, My Roanoke Nightmare is an injection of fresh blood into what was becoming a decaying formula. It's the American Crime Story version of American Horror Story.
It was all decidedly weird and peculiar, and although Murphy has previously said that the sixth season will tie together the mythos of American Horror Story it all still seems a big mystery.
So, was it worth the wait?... Hard to say just yet, but color my interest piqued- for now. We'll just have to wait and see where it goes from here before I make any serious judgment calls. Until then, it was okay, I suppose. Not great, but okay.
It's possible that in the mockumentary, creators (and writers of this episode) Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have hit on a format where AHS's famous vagaries of plot and character are a virtue, not a liability.
"My Roanoke Nightmare" is a promising start with a central mystery as tantalizing as the ads teasing it. The marketing paid off, now Ryan Murphy has to, too.
For long-time viewers of the show, the "show within a show" format is a fresh shakeup from its traditional format. Additionally, the episode resonates as a more mature version of the storyline from the first season, Murder House.
