This series embodies the story of Will Freeman, who lives a quiet life in San Francisco as a successful songwriter in that region. One day, Fiona, a needy single mother and her 11-year-old son Marcus, move to that region. During that period, Will does not expect that things will remain different with that single mother.
Basically, About a Boy has been expertly rigged in Walton's favor... but it can't solve the fundamental issue with any of the actor's shows: he's just not particularly appealing.
About a Boy seems willing to go to contrived lengths to warm the cockles of your heart. But because it comes from a superb TV producer, Jason Katims, the show gets a stay of judgment coming out of the chute.
With Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) as creator and producer, About a Boy could very well be the next universally appealing family show.
It's interesting to watch Katims bend the half-hour format to his needs rather than the other way around: No other showrunner alive would dare use an extended potty-training scene for anything other than a punch line.
