A dramatic and sci-fi series that follows a group of astronauts who were the first humans walked on Mars, those who risked their whole lives leaving their darlings behind to find out more about interplanetary colonization. It also shows us how badly their families affected.
Visually compelling with a nicely pensive music score - courtesy of Colin Stetson of Arcade Fire and Bon Iver - "The First" is otherwise plodding and padded.
Some may say it's out of touch, but really, "The First" feels like a pioneer amid a sea of narrative cynicism - a look past the present to where we need to be, and how we can get there.
You don't have to be enthralled with the technical complexity and logistics involved in sending a crewed mission to Mars to be captivated by The First, but it helps.
