From its inauspicious beginnings when one television executive handed another a slip of paper that said simply MTV COPS, Miami Vice became the most aesthetically interesting show of the 1980s.
Viewed three decades on, one of the most striking things about Miami Vice is that almost every episode features a recognisable guest star...With its anti-heroes and experiments with form, Miami Vice was a key influence on the development of TV.
The series' use of pop music was unprecedented. Entire songs would play out over montages or shots of Crockett and Tubbs driving/boating someplace with minimal dialogue.
Its undercover cops (Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas) preen like male models... Still, Vice's virtues in its 1984-85 season are plentiful, including offbeat guest turns...
There's probably no way to appreciate how special the show seemed when it first aired unless you were there at the time, and had been watching TV long enough to accept that even the smartest, best-written shows were going to look like mud.
