Black Lightning - Season 1, Episode 05: And Then the Devil Brought the Plague: The Book of Green Light
Trailer
This series sees the retired Black Lightning return to the hero life after a decade hanging up his costume and devoting himself to the life of an educator, as well as its effects on his family life.
It only takes this episode a few minutes to start dropping tantalizing hints about the characters' backstories...In an interesting parallel, both Tobias Whale and Anissa Pierce spend this episode investigating their own family histories.
Though not as action-packed or emotional as the previous outings, this episode sets the table for the Black Lightning vs Tobias grudge match that's obviously coming.
Black Lightning found our hero and villain pursuing each other more persistently than before, and the family secrets that loomed over their heads not only afforded insight into what founded their beef, but also informed each man's personality and values.
Given how many subplots and threads Black Lightning's already introduced, "The Book of Green Light" is a welcome change of pace, but at the same time, it still manages to introduce an important new depth to Black Lightning's mythos.
You can tell a lot about a show from a mediocre episode. "And Then the Devil Brought the Plague" was a mediocre episode of Black Lightning. Still, if this is going to be what a medicore episode looks like, then this show is something special.
Black Lightning digs into the past and brings to light several backstories of several different characters. While these storylines are interesting in isolation, it just starts to feel like too much all at once.
