Season five takes on a new and different series, as Taylor faces a new character, while Chuck returns to his university to find a new path to take. There's a big Ax Project that seems marginalized due to a new family crisis, while Taylor emphasizes independence during these moments with risky gameplay that hinders the path of everything, and puts Chuck and Wendy in a position that looks very embarrassing.
The bottom line is that Showtime's high-stakes drama remains enormously entertaining, making its return more than welcome, even if the show's latest creative bets feel somewhat hedged.
As always, the craftsmanship remains superlative. What other show has this many first-rate New York actors who can juggle dialogue so rococo it leaves the listener with vertigo? What other drama is this funny?
