Struggling against survival, residents of Pretty Lake, a small town, where people over 22 years old are died mysteriously, the thing that leads the survivors to search for a way to survive, especially after the ignorance of the government.
The premiere episode's script, by Michael McGowan, gives little indication as to where the show is headed and even less indication that it's going to surprise us.
Between looked like a show worth sticking around for, especially in this dead zone of television after spring TV and before summer TV. There are lots of things for the show to have fun with.
Between is all concept -- characters, production values, thematic depth, and the other things that flesh out a sci-fi idea beyond its genre trappings are flat, dull and unengaging.
Unlike previous Netflix originals, this one doles out its episodes one per week, just like network TV. It's also different in that... well, I've already run out of what makes Between something special.
The town is lovely, the premise solid if overfamiliar, but the script lacks both depth and tension (big problem), and McCurdy is one of the few cast members who can act. All of which makes it difficult to care very much.
While Between is a somewhat derivative creature that's not likely to rewrite the rules of the genre, the first episode (the only one made available to critics) sucks you right in with its intriguing premise and exciting action.
