After they have gotten too much from their repressive families, two teenagers Harry and June have made their decision to leave. After that, they find themselves involved in a serious fight against a weird scientist as they discover that June has an extraordinary ability, she can change her shape and this scientist wants to know the secret.
Slowburn pacing casts a spell, too, and if June and Harry never convince as Yorkshire's answer to Romeo and Juliet, the mystery swirling around the former's supernatural abilities is undeniably riveting.
Balancing the solid romance and the tantalizing genre elements, with nicely restrained effects... and reliance on acting, makes The Innocents one of the strongest entries in the semi-magical YA metaphor-drama genre.
Ultimately, this strange little YA series, manages to deliver a propulsive plot along with compelling adult characters that enhance the story surrounding its teen protagonists.
