They are parallel and complex stories about a mix of stories of love, forgiveness, remorse and so on. This story begins with men who are about to die: both of them warn of a growing child, both of whom want to communicate, and no child wants any other relationship. However, Earl's son, Bartridge, is a gifted kinza and Jimmy Gator's daughter is cokehead and waif. A moderate and caring nurse mediated for Earl, up the son; a crooked and Muslim prayer meets the daughter. It all seems to be surprising and to keep thinking about everything that's going on.

Short Cuts is clearly the starting point, but not the ending point for a movie that is probably the most overstuffed with ideas of anything in Paul Thomas Anderson's career.
You don't have to like everything [Anderson] does, but if you enjoy seeing the walls rattled and the roof raised in the Hollywood citadel, you've got to love it.
