John is very egoistic, greedy and self-absorbed, as is his wife. With Fanny's help he talks himself out of the promise he made to his dying father; to help his stepmother and sisters. Nevertheless he regards it as his obligation to present them to suitable potential husbands, as long as his wife does not interfere.
