A story that recounts a series of comedic and thrilling events about three of the sisters who discover that they are witches and supernatural beings. Girls try to cope with environmental and family conditions and overcome their demons. They will begin to tear down the patriarchal bonds but will maintain their family ties that are in their relationships with others, and may strengthen their supernatural abilities.
While the original Elders were kind of selfish and dumb, these new ones are flat-out malevolent. It's a great change, but it's also seriously messed up.
Surely the new Charmed - which speaks to younger viewers in a language they'll appreciate while honoring the original's themes of sisterhood and female empowerment - can coexist peacefully with the old Charmed.
I'm curious to see how that same fierce feminism is presented in future episodes... If Charmed can integrate its political bent rather than just shouting out all the greatest catchphrases, it just might be a force to be reckoned with.
The new Charmed has set itself up as a feminist and progressive upgrade of the original, in ways both positive and problematic. The writers' room is extremely diverse, with a very clear feminist vision of the show.
Charmed certainly has the potential to grow into the show it wants to be, but don't come into this new series looking for nuance or even that electrifying thrill of seeing women using undeniable power to make the world a better place.
I just wish creators would realise that people of colour, feminists and LGBT people are still just people, not caricatures of what we stand for that you can neatly squeeze into a box.
The supernatural elements of the plot seem borrowed from old episodes of Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The special effects are super-cheesy, not much better than an old episode of Bewitched.
