Abby Kowalski is a single police officer from Chicago who lands her dream job as a detective. However, it causes a rift with her three cop brothers when she decides to join their department.
I can't fault Against the Wall for not being as ambitious as The Chicago Code, but I can fault it for not being ambitious enough to have a clear idea of what it wants to be.
Unfortunately, star Rachael Carpani's Abby Kowalski is the least interesting character in a not especially galvanizing show - no further investigation required.
Against the Wall is all about putting women in charge - even those who are visibly pregnant - and that certainly makes it stand out in a flooded sea of crime shows that tend to pair strong secondary female characters up with stronger male leads.
It's the real-life problems in Abby's life that help make her character feel like more than just a pretty lady clopping around a city in heels, interrogating with zeal.
It might provide grown-up drama for women of an age more often served by sexist sitcoms. If not, Lifetime may be delivering just another old-fashioned family drama with nothing new to say.
Despite the pilot's pandering localism and cliched proclamations, Against the Wall features some watchable performances and a premise that might yield interesting developments down the line.
