It is a new experience in the 1950s, when Macarena Granada, who became the Hollywood star, returned to an ideal direction for a new artwork. This woman has returned to Spain to shoot a huge movie about Queen Isabella the First, Queen of Castile, who caused great controversy.
This bittersweet political satire uncovers the shameful collusion of Hollywood with Franco back then - the roots of fascism in this country today. And Penelope as a new kind of anti-fascist female action hero - move over Wonder Woman and Atomic Blonde.
Trueba is determined to give every actor, cameraman and grip a few scenes in which to shine, resulting in an overstuffed story that staggers from subplot to subplot.
Though "The Queen of Spain" looks terrific and features a warm, glamorous performance by Penélope Cruz, that promise is fulfilled only fitfully in this valentine to moviemaking.
