Sphere

Discovering a huge strange ship of about 1000 thousand feet under the surface of the water, a group of American scientists, do their best and struggle against finding out more information about that ship, but incidents come to climax when they find out that it's a spaceship falls three hundred years ago.

Let's face facts: Michael Crichton is a hack. He comes up with innovative concepts, but his characters are cardboard cutouts. Given the psychological foundations of the story, that's an egregious flaw, and the ending is absurdly dissatisfying.
