The film is based on a novel written by Catherine Storr. It is about eleven-year-old girl- Charlotte Burke who is stuck in the loneliness and the monotony of the reality. Ultimately, she can feel empathy between her and an ill boy. They come in a dream world where she drew in her composition book.

The scenes of Anna running around mountains in a moment of escape or toward an enormous lighthouse don't have the feel of something whitewashed like The Sound of Music but rather the dark undercurrent of the delusions of the girls in Heavenly Creatures.
