Moving from one continent to another, the movie highlights on the love story of a couple which have started since they were students in the college. They have lived together good and hard times through a dramatic journey from their wedding to the birth of their first baby.
None of the characters in Life Itself are interesting on their own, so Fogelman attempts to gin them up some fake pathos through death, either theirs or someone near them.
...if your attitude is that life is meaningless and then you die, you may want to give this one a pass. Fogelman clearly believes life has meaning, even if we can't always see it for ourselves.
The worst thing about Life Itself is not that it is emotionally sadistic. It's just how much it wants to be emotionally sadistic, while missing the mark by a mile.
Fogelman tries to tug on the heartstrings by giving us a story full of people who go through some harrowing, emotional ordeals, but it constantly rings hollow.
This is a film that understands that life is messy but doesn't understand how to express that in any way that even remotely resembles life as we know it.
