Huey and Nebi Bernard are in a deep love story after Huey crashes into Bernard's high-profile painting. Based on caricatures dating back to 1957, their story began as unfriendly friends in 1980 in New York. But several years later, Bernard falls in love with Huey by chance.
Wades in its own shallow cleverness, and seems to be under the misapprehension that acknowledging the shallowness of the characters and storyline is, in itself, clever. But it only takes a few scenes for that observation to become painfully obvious.
Bernard & Huey feels like a throwback in more ways than one... It's smoothly helmed, though, by indie vet Dan Mirvish, who's clearly an actor's director.
