It is a documentary film that embodies the story of five senior baristas who find themselves pushing to perfection through a unique competition. The competition is for coffee as everyone looks to win the Barista National Championship, a surreal contest where there is one mistake that reflects the course of things.
Baijnauth struck gold with his five baristas. Their collective passion steers the sometimes-unfocused narrative, and their perfectionist brushes with madness give this celebratory portrait a slight edge.
Thanks to director Rock Baijnauth's playful, nonjudgmental approach to these obsessive characters, the whole enterprise comes across as endearingly -- and perhaps even admirably -- ridiculous, rather than laughably so.
