Mac McGill was the longtime offensive coordinator for the Dillon High School football team at the beginning of the series, and the presumed heir to the job of head coach. But quarterbacks coach Eric Taylor got the job instead, making for an uneasy relationship between the two at the outset. Some in the community favor Mac for the job early on, and don't respond particularly well when it goes to Coach Taylor. Mac also gets in some trouble for making racist comments, prompting some players on the team to walk out at a critical time.
