Phillip Jennings is the American name of an undercover KGB spy living in the Washington, D.C., area in the early 1980s. His real name is Mischa and he is in an arranged marriage with fellow undercover KGB spy Nadezhda, who lives an American identity as Elizabeth Jennings. The couple has two children, a teenage daughter named Paige and a son named Henry.Phillip and Elizabeth pose as travel agents and run an office as their front. Phillip, like Elizabeth, loves his children very much and, while his arranged marriage with Elizabeth isn't particularly close, he seems to be more interested in making a deeper personal connection with her. Phillip seems to be wanting a more normal life, which would include a more romantic connection with the woman he's spent much of his adult life pretending to love. Phillip's spy duties often involve engaging in other close and often sexual relations with other people whose trust he needs to gain in order to get access to information. Phillip seems, at times, conflicted about such actions. Phillip is engaged in a particularly serious and long-term relationship with a woman named Martha, who works at FBI headquarters for a high-ranking official and is privy to much of what the agency is doing. Phillip poses as a man named Clark when he's with Martha, convincing her that he needs FBI intel for his work with the Committee to Oversee United States Counterintelligence Agencies and that their conversations are strictly classified. Over time, he gives in to her desires for a romantic relationship and insists that this, too, be kept quiet.Despite their marital unease, Phillip and Elizabeth are a great spy duo. But, while never abandoning a mission and always following orders, Philip has made some suggestions that life might be easier for them if they gave up the spy life and built real lives in the U.S. This questioning of their purpose for being in the U.S. makes Elizabeth question Phillip's loyalty. Background: Philip was excited to join the KGB back home in the Soviet Union, but the assignment in the United States derailed his long-standing relationship with a woman named Irina, who was also a spy. Sent to different places, they meet up again briefly when it is revealed that she is working as a Soviet spy in Toronto and, as she's also posing as a travel agent, they reconnect at a travel agents' convention in New York.
