The series tells the tales of Western legends such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, featuring “the violent world of cowboys, Indians, outlaws and law men.”
What's fresh in this retelling... is the degree to which it has gone in for re-creation as opposed to documentation, and the fact that it has drafted movie cowboys... as talking-head commentators alongside the customary scholars.
The cinematography is admirable, and the accounts from historians and academics are sound. But the sight of Burt Reynolds in rose-tinted glasses explaining that George Armstrong Custer "was a hell of a soldier" does little to inform the project.
