The comedy series revolves around Vernon Brownmule, nicknamed 'Burnin 'Vernon', which appears through various moves. This person faces a bad path while being kicked out of country music, only to appear after 20 years as the second best imitation already.
When even cable outlet CMT wants in on the original, scripted series game, you know #PeakTV has gone too far, especially when the result is the unfunny, cheap-looking Still the King.
If you must watch one show about a failed Elvis impersonator, make it Still the King. As a TV critic, that's my one charitable deed for the year -- OK, maybe the decade.
There's an amiability to the show that charmed me, to my enormous surprise, and little asides like the local restaurant being called Tepid's Lukewarm Grill help keep everything afloat.

TV critics above all should approach everything with an open mind. In that respect, this one lands somewhere between a pleasant surprise and better-than-expected.
