While Empire hit that sweet spot of camp, trash and flash (at least for a while), Star is mostly trash -- which, of course, is not necessarily a deterrent to high ratings, but let's hope in this case it is. Queen Latifah at least deserves better.
Demorest is convincing in the role, but she's not crowd-pleasing. She may be pre-ordained by the show to thrive, but she has the reckless and raw vibe of someone else, a survivor.
Absurd? You bet. Entertaining? Not really, because Daniels lays it on so thick. Fox is waiting until the New Year for followup episodes. Maybe they figured the audience would need time to breathe. Or find the remote.
None of the three is much of an actress, and their weak performances can't give the show the weight or momentum it needs. Awkward dialogue and cliched plots are additional problems.
