High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is just fun to watch. It knows its earnestness can be very silly, and leans hard into taking loving shots at that earnestness.
The Series will leave fans impressed with its authentic feel, comedy, and quality. It is a production which seeks to redefine one of Disney's biggest franchises, and so far, it seems the series' cast and crew are together doing it right.
While the more prominent arc isn't exactly revolutionary, this newest installment shows early signs of its ability to root itself in something a little deeper. And though the clunky title can feel like an act of aggression, damn, these kids are talented.
Hardly unbiased as a big fan of High School Musical, this will be my daughters' (and my) guilty pleasure. Bravo for a teen drama filled with humor, talent, original music, and diversity!
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is as charming and endearingly tongue-in-cheek as that title would suggest. It mostly exists in that sweet spot between pure empty nostalgia and something completely new.
None of the story lines are particularly intriguing, but they don't need to be. This is as entertaining and light as eating a marshmallow, delicious for a few seconds, disappearing instantly. [Full review in Spanish]
These moments, however, tend to highlight the fact that other aspects of the show remain frustratingly similar to the movie's overwhelmingly two-dimensional approach.
