Caroline Bamber, the island's outgoing governor, is poisoned by a drink from Commander Patterson at the departure party, but Goodman finds an unsigned letter in her bag warning that someone has come out to kill her. Private Secretary Elli Goodman tells Caroline that she was cheating President François Tromor on an affair, but Deputy Governor Andy Hamilton and his assistant, Lucy Preval, are also in the frame. Goodman concludes how Caroline was poisoned but his success is less in finding a girlfriend online.
But it's all perfectly watchable because the guest stars include sitcom royal Wendy Craig as Humphrey's beloved aunt and Keith Allen as a career criminal - both in their element.
Yes, the plots are made of the thinnest gauze and the characters cut from the thickest cardboard. But there you have it, Death in Paradise is what it is: sunny, silly and a huge hit.
