This comedy series follows the daily activity of Dave, a young smart guy, who thinks himself talented in rap and he is going to be the next superstar in rap, so he struggles against achieving his dreams, through convincing his friends with his talent.
That's all well and good, but television presents a different set of demands, many of which Burd - playing up both his Dave and Lil Dicky personas - meets with remarkable ease.
Dave feels like, of all things, a parody of FX's Atlanta and its absurdist take on authenticity, the organic evolution of hip-hop and the genre's ability to highlight and validate unheard voices, something Atlanta already does exceptionally
Feels somewhat like being trapped with a terrible party companion, one who both fails to meet the energy of the occasion and is an oversharer besides. It comes bearing at once too much information and too little else of what makes television work.
Dave turns out to be a strong, episodic platform for [Burd's] persona, providing that the show doesn't stray too far from the rap skills that can turn a meme into a zeitgeist.
