In that powerful series, there seem to be more powerful events where Guinevere wants to leave Camelot with Leontes, he is obliged to remain as one of the Arthur Knights trained by Gawain, a brilliant strategist who breaks Arthur's sword in combat. After Arthur is warned to resist his feelings for Guinevere, Merlin sets out to have a new sword made by the isolated Caliburn bladesmith, a widower living with his daughter Excalibur. Calibron's desire to give Arthur the sword he designed himself leads to the destruction of his Merlin by magic, and inadvertently drowns Excalibur, and then calls the sword.
More often than not, this is an adaptation that feels torn between approaches, between reverence and entertainment, and that leaves the series somewhat lumpy and inert.
