The movie centers on theater major Doug, who has muscular dystrophy and is more than ready to flee the watchful eye of his frantic mother. His life changes forever when he hires an underachieving driver Scott and agrees to go on a spontaneous road trip with Scott and his college crush.
Though it doesn't entirely escape the aura of being a much more serious variant of a formula...the lead performances in particular give it a degree of emotional depth.
The movie fails to create a full character out of Doug beyond his disability and general social awkwardness. Mitte's broad performance matches filmmaking that paints a muddy picture of the hero's specific disability.
