An African-American nursery teacher named Dorothy has a strange and exciting story in her life. The story began when Dorothy left for a big family dinner to search for her dog. During a major blizzard in New York City, she was swept away by a severe cyclone and found herself miraculously moving to a fictional land called Oz. There is a witch telling Dorothy how to go home again and there is no path but a wizard named Wiz who will help her to reach Manhattan.
Sidney Lumet's spectacular, joyous production of The Wiz generates a mood of wonder and sentimental rapture recalling the arrival of the Mother Ship in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
