After he faces a serious challenge against a 70-foot shark which tried to kill him, the expert diver Jonas Taylor decided to stay away from the dangerous situations and work nearby. But his fate puts him in a water challenge again when he sees a gather of people are trapped in a submerged submarine.
It's never going to win an Oscar - unless the Academy starts giving out awards for Best Picture Where Jason Statham Fights a Shark - but if you're looking for some enjoyably bonkers summer-themed fun, here it is.
Maybe director John Turteltaub thought the barrage of pathos and yuks would distract from the fact that his star is a very big fish that is not very bright. Still: cool shark, bro.
The film is restrained; it's not as gory as you'd expect. In a way, it's a throwback to the type of creature features produced during the 1950s, when giant bugs and thawed-out dinosaurs threatened mankind almost every Saturday afternoon.
