The film revolves around Margaret Friar, the daughter of a local football manager who once meets young German soldier Bert Trautman. Margaret's father was so impressed with Bert's ingenuity as a goalkeeper that he took him out of the camp to play in a local team. The film follows the story of a German prisoner of war and a young woman at the turn of personal tragedy and public hostility at some point in history.
