A former slave (Chiwetel Ejiofor) recounts the tale of his friend Ward Allen (Jim Caviezel), an upper-class Southerner who rejects his plantation heritage for the freedom of life on a river.
Despite some fine performances, the film has difficulty finding a consistent tone, and the well-intentioned script emphasizes melodrama and sentimentality.
