The film tells the story of a tango's favorite couple, even after the divorce, Argentina's famous tango dancers Maria Nieves Rego and Juan Carlos Copes, as well as a painful separation tore them apart.
Their endless conflict, so reflective of tango's push-pull tension, should make for compelling content. But unfortunately for Kral, neither of his subjects is especially introspective - or consistent.
What makes the film so effective is a sense of poignancy that far exceeds its subject matter, making it less a film about dance than a character study about artistic and personal temperaments with a very broad resonance.
Our Last Tango is a complicated story of partnership and rupture, a film that foregrounds storytelling, dance, dramatised presentation and the construction of the world it evokes.
