This movie revolves around the struggles of a psychotic man, who faces abuse during his childhood, so when he grow up, he begins to kill women in New York and use their scalps for his mannequin.
Best described as the diametric opposite of a refreshing shower, William Lustig's Maniac has long been reviled as one of horror's truly ugly films.

Seen today, the movie has more in common with the grungy Times Square aesthetic of Abel Ferrara than with the multitudes of slasher flicks that followed it.
