After suffering a brutal trauma, Julia (Ashley C. Williams) uses an unorthodox form of therapy to restore herself. She works in a clinic by day. At night, she turns to murder, after being gang raped, by a group of sadistic men. After the attack, she hides out in a seedy bar until she meets a strange group of women. This group of female killers are brought together by an even stranger counsellour.
presents a stylised, off-kilter world of revenge (or at least revenge fantasy) where true freedom and true self-realisation are states of mind, and of delusion.
... studied and stylish -- in a very self-conscious way ... We've seen it all before, in 'Ms .45,' 'Basic Instinct' and other feminist revenge fantasies.
A slow burn thriller anchored by a breathtaking performance by Williams. It's got the visceral moments but makes you think bigger than a viscerally satisfying revenge. That makes it a powerful movie regardless of genre.
Julia does put a small spin on the by-now well-worn [rape revenge] formula[...] But ultimately that's not enough to elevate Julia above its genre roots.
