The movie centers on Ella who is under a spell to be constantly obedient. Determined to gain control of her life and decisions, Ella sets off on a journey she hopes will end with the lifting of the curse in question. a fact she must hide from her new step-family in order to protect the prince of the land, her friend for whom she's falling.
Avoids a misstep common among girl-empowerment flicks, which often emasculate the male lead to make the heroine truly heroic manages to make both leads appealing.
The Narrator begins and ends the story talking about how fairy tales transport us to another place, but the sad fact is that Ella lets us stay right where we are.
