The dramatic events of this movie revolve around the loss of American army in the Vietnam and the assignment of a US Captain to find and chases a colonel in his arm because of he behaves like insane and kills many innocents.
The new version shows that Coppola had originally intended something far more political, and while some of the new stuff could've remained lost, it does not diminish the movie's impact.
This is the one where [Coppola] honors his vision -- or clears his name, whichever way you look at it.
