Megara is a character from Greek Mythology.According to the classical myths, Megara was the eldest daughter of King Creon of Thebes. She was married to the hero Heracles (known to the Romans as Hercules) and she bore him several sons.Disney created an animated movie called Hercules, which was a musical comedy based on the life of the Greek hero, released in 1997. In this movie, Megara appears as the hero's love interest. There is no mention of her family, she just appears to be a woman travelling alone who is rescued by Hercules. She turns out to be a spy working for the Hades, lord of the Underworld, who is seeking to overthrow Zeus and the other gods so he can rule the earth and heavens by himself. The only person capable of defeating Hades is Hercules, and so Hades uses Megara (frequently called Meg for short in this movie) to seduce the hero and lure him into a trap.Meg agrees to help Hades because she exchanged her soul in order to save the life of her ex-boyfriend, who betrayed her, so now she serves Hades, and he promises to release her if she can trap Hercules.Megara falls in love with Hercules, and tells Hades that he can not be defeated because he has no weakness. Hades then realises that Hercules does have a weakness - his love for Megara. And so Hades captures Meg and promises to release her in exchange for Hercules' strength. Hercules gives Hades his strength, but then finds out that Megara has been working for Hades all along.Hercules is heart-broken, but he attempts to defeat a cyclops that has been unleashed on the city of Thebes by Hades. Megara fears for Hercules' life, and she enlists the help of Philoctetes, Hercules' personal trainer, to help talk sense into the hero. Philoctetes shows up just in time to remind Hercules that he does not need his strength to defeat the cyclops - he has the instinct to overcome his enemies, and so Hercules blinds the cyclops with a torch and uses a rope to trip him off a cliff. The tremor caused by the Cyclops' death nearly crushes Hercules under a pillar, but Megara pushes him out of the way and is crushed herself. Hercules is able to free her, as his strength has been restored due to Hades' promise being broken - that Meg would not be hurt.Hercules then sets off to help the Olympian gods win the war against the Titans. Because of this, Hades' plan to rule the earth and heavens is foiled. But shortly after, Megara dies from her injuries and her soul is called to the underworld. Hercules rushes to the Underworld and offers to take Megara's place. Hades agrees, as he wants Hercules to stay trapped in the Underworld forever, but as Hercules rescues Megara's soul, he becomes a god himself, as it is this one brave deed that enables Hercules to join the Olympians. Hercules knocks Hades into a pit where he is tormented by all of his dead subjects.Hercules re-unites Meg's soul with her body, and is transported to Mt. Olympus where the gods welcome him home, but he choses to stay on earth as a mortal, as he feels his life without Meg would be empty.TRIVIA (**WARNING** contains written content that may be inappropriate for young audiences)-While Megara appears as a spy in this movie instead of a usual Disney Princess, this version is not quite as dark as the original myth. According to most sources, Megara and Heracles were happily married for a while, but Heracles was driven mad and he killed Megara and their children in a frenzy (Caused by Hera whom was NOT his real mother, in fact Heracles was half mortal in that his mother was a mortal with whom Zues cheated on Hera with. In order to get revenge on her unfaithful husband, Hera caused Heracles' madness). When Heracles recovered from his frenzy, he was so overcome with guilt that he consulted the Oracle of Delphi for a way to atone. The oracle sent him to offer his services to King Eurystheus, which eventually lead to Heracles performing his 12 legendary labours.-The scene when Hercules rescues Meg from the centaur Nessus is inspired by the myth of Heracles' second wife, Deianeira. Originally, Nessus offered to help Deianeira across a river, but he attempted to rape her when they were out of site. Heracles heard Deianeira's screams, however, and shot Nessus with a well-aimed arrow that was poisoned with a Hydra's blood.-Disney's Megara was voiced by Susan Egan, who also provided the voices for characters from Studio Gibli movies. She did the voice of Gina the inn keeper in Poco Rosso, and she did the voice of Lin the bathhouse worker in Spirited Away. Susan Egan has also released albums of her own renditions of musical songs, including a medley of Disney Princess tracks, and she has even done a cover of Kate Bush's Wuthering Hights. Show less «
