Jack Phillips features in most of the dramatisations of Titanic as he is based on one of the Marconi Wireless Operators stationed on Titanic for her maiden voyage in 1912. He was accompanied by Harold Bride on this voyage. He is famous for sending out the distress signal after Titanic hit the iceburg, which brought the Carpathia to their rescue. He refused to leave his post until the last moment, informing nearby ships of their continuing status until the electricity on his Marconi cut out and he was forced to stop. He did not survive the sinking.
