Joe is struck mute by the horrors he sees as the flu and a freak fire devastate his home town, the result of his own mother being killed. Guarded by Lucy Swann and Larry Underwood, he grows to like Larry despite earlier wanting to kill him in a feral rage and is one of the Free Zone's few surviving children after the plague!
