Awkward but eager, Alfred is the tall, lanky nephew of Miss O'Brien, who convinced Mr. Carson to give the boy a shot at a job as a footman after her sister wrote to her and asked for the opportunity. Mr. Carson is indeed impressed with Alfred's work ethic, and this earns him opportunities to take on more responsibility. Alfred's morals are also very important to him and he must speak up when he sees something he finds to be wrong. He served in the army during World War I and took a job as a hotel waiter after his discharge. He really had an interest in cooking but his aunt urged him to take a footman position, which has greater chances for promotion.
