(SPOILERS) A descendant of Girion, the Lord of Dale. Bard slew the dragon Smaug who had terrorized Laketown (Esgaroth) for years, and so refounded Dale under the Lonely Mountain. He killed Smaug with the Black Arrow passed down to him from his Father.
